NAMI Spartanburg is a non-profit grassroots organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals and their families who live with mental illness. NAMI provides free education, support and advocacy to people with mental illness and their families in Spartanburg, Cherokee, and Union County. NAMI has played an important role for mental health in the community by giving people with mental health challenges and their family members hope by teaching classes and providing support groups. Their programs help break down the stigma around mental health so they can receive the help they need.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month and NAMI contributes by participating in community events such as the County’s Promation on May 16th, the NAMI Upstate walk on May 21st, and Miles with the Mayor on May 28th. NAMI Spartanburg aspires for Mental Health Awareness month to be a starting point for people to do more for themselves or a loved one who struggles with mental health. These struggles should be seen and treated just like any other health challenge.
