Hatcher Garden & Woodland Preserve

Support Your Woods in the City

Once a worn-out cotton field, Hatcher Garden now stands as a testament to the power of partnerships and to the integrity of Harold and Josephine Hatcher’s vision of community. For over 35 years, the woodland paths have been open to the public every day of the year from dawn to dusk thanks to the support of people from near and far.

Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve, Inc. exists to provide a place where the public can come for inspiration, enjoyment, and education through the study of nature. Nestled in the heart of Spartanburg, Hatcher Garden provides a beautiful place of respite, tranquility, and learning in nature for over 65,000 visitors annually. It is a welcoming, accessible place for all people.

There are many public gardens and arboreta around the world that began as private family estates. However, what sets Hatcher Garden apart is the fact that the Hatchers were not wealthy landowners. They were humble people dedicated to a rich spiritual and intellectual life and they were unconcerned with material gain.
