Recognizing the invaluable advantages access to outdoor experiences offers those we serve\, the CLC plans to develop a nature preserve with specific features for those with disabilities. The center was recently gifted an eight-acre parcel of land at Lake Blalock in northern Spartanburg County that provides the perfect setting for the preserve. The proposed CLC Nature Preserve will provide fully accessible trails as well as an event center\, picnic tables\, shelters\, a boat dock with adaptive features and more\, so individuals of all ages and abilities can enjoy the great outdoors. This project will greatly enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities of all ages. SUMMARY:Speaking Down Barriers Learning Us
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Manday April 18th fro this month’s Learning Us discussion!!! You can register for this FREE VIRTUAL EVENT by using the following link in and choosing ‘April 18th @ 6:00 PM Learning Us’. \nhttps://linktr.ee/SpeakingDownBarriers \nAlong with Speaking Down Barriers April theme of ‘End Oppression’ we will be asking the question: How do we move on with our work when mistakes have been made or done harm?” \nThe work of achieving equity for all and ending oppression is not an exact science. In any work worth doing\, mistakes will be made. Harm could possibly be done even with the purest and most sincere intentions. Perfection can never be the goal because it is unattainable. Consistency\, though\, is. \nSo what can be done to continue the work we may have chosen to do while learning mistakes that may be made? How can we correct and overcome potential harm and still move forward? How can we promote healing afterwards? \nWe look forward to discussing this with you all on Monday starting at 6pm! \nLearning Us is a space for white folx to rethink and dismantle oppression. We explore concepts of white supremacy and work to transform patters of dominance into shared power and mutuality.

SUMMARY:PAL Trail Stewardship
DESCRIPTION:Help PAL and Trees Coalition restore and maintain the beauty of our parks and trails.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTaking care of our trails is a crucial element of any trails system\, and except for the big stuff like repaving\, much of that work can be done by volunteers. \nBelow is a list of trail stewardship events throughout the year\, each of them held from 9-11am. We’ll have some hand tools available\, but bring gloves and any tools you might want as we fight back the ivy\, privet\, Elaeagnus and other invasive plants species that threaten our trees and our trails. Keeping these trails in good shape means they’ll last and serve as safe places to play for a long time. \nSign up now\, and get us on your calendars. Let’s create a culture of maintenance and safety for our trails! \nFor additional questions or concerns contact Ned Barrett at nbarrett@palspartanburg.org \nMasks are encouraged for all participants attending the event.

SUMMARY:Speaking Down Barriers Healing Us: Power & Privilege
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday April 1st for Healing Us: A Black Autonomous Space! You can use the following link and choose “April 1st @6:00 PM: Healing Us” to register for this FREE virtual event: \nhttps://linktr.ee/SpeakingDownBarriers \nOur month long theme for our gatherings in April is ‘End Oppression’. Our discussion this Friday will center on power and privilege and how (or even if) the two can be used to end oppression. \nWe are constantly seeing how power and privilege are abused and often lead to the oppression of marginalized folx. Even when we see minorities rise to positions of power (i.e. Supreme Court Justice nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson) that power is challenged and often minimized by those in the majority with seemingly more authority. When we talk about the power dynamic\, it is usually in the sense of the powerful versus the powerless. Privilege then becomes the vehicle of oppressive power\, since those with it use it to pick and choose how their power is utilized to benefit themselves\, their agenda and those who share their beliefs. \nBut what if we could flip the script or change that narrative? \nHealing Us is a racial affinity space for Black folx to work together to heal internalized oppression and engage in wholeness\, affirmation and liberation. \nWe look forward to having this discussion with you all on Friday starting at 6pm!
